Packaging

Our packaging: Bottle 100% recycled plastic • removable sleeve

Henkel's packaging strategy

When developing our packaging, we take great care to ensure that you can use our products safely while reducing our environmental footprint and waste.

Our packaging experts are continuously working on packaging with the lowest possible use of materials and with materials for which public recycling systems exist. Because we consider our products along their entire life cycle, we also consider the disposal or recycling of packaging materials. The aim is to achieve a circular economy for plastics, as has long been established for paper, for example.

By 2025 Henkel aims for 100 percent of our packaging to be recyclable or reusable. Furthermore, we aim to reduce the amount of virgin plastics from fossil sources in our consumer products by 50 percent. We will achieve this by increasing the proportion of recycled plastic to more than 30 percent, by reducing the plastic volume, and by increasingly using bio-based plastics.

Our recycability and recycled content

The bottles of our fabric softener products are always made of unmixed plastic.  Furthermore, many of these bottles from our Vernel brand are made from 100 percent recycled material. They are surrounded by a sleeve. The advantage of this thin film sleeve is that it covers the bottle, which can take on a yellow to grayish appearance due to its high volume of recycled content. The film is also customizable, so that the bottle itself does not need to be colored and can be recycled very easily. When the content of the bottle is used up, please separate the film from the bottle so that the bottle can be recycled via e.g. the yellow bin. To make this process easier, the film cover is perforated – and a product logo with a “zipper” refers to it.

Full recyclability of our Vernel bottles* is certified by Institute cycloss - HTP. http://cyclos-htp.de/home/ueber-das-institut/

Social Plastic®

In 2019, we started using 25% Social Plastic® in our Vernel Fresh Control bottles packaging. In using Social Plastic® we are contributing to a circular economy for plastics and social progress. Social Plastic® is recycled plastic, which was collected on the beach and on land and which we receive as part of our long-term partnership with the social enterprise Plastic Bank. Plastic Bank has set itself the goal of combating the problem of plastic waste in the oceans and at the same time creating opportunities for people living in poverty. As part of the partnership with Henkel, plastic collection centers were set up in Haiti. The local population gives away collected plastic waste and exchanges it for money or social benefits. For this reason the collected and recycled material is called "Social Plastic®" –  a term that Plastic Bank has registered and protected worldwide. Our recyclability and recycled content

Our packaging ambition: 100% recyclable with removable sleeve. We drive progress towards a circular economy by creating smarter packaging for the benefit of people and the planet.

  • The packaging for our consumer products fulfils many different and important functions.
  • In a circular economy, resource consumption can be reduced if materials are kept within the cycles of the economy for as long as possible.
  • Our mission is to include materials from sustainable sources and use a smart design to close the loop.

Our aims for the future

By 2025 we aim for 100% of our packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable and to use 35% recycled plastic for all the plastic packing of our consumer good products in Europe. We

believe that progress towards sustainability in packaging will only be possible if organizations from all stages in the packaging value chain work together to drive innovation in packaging development and to improve the recycling infrastructure allowing for a circular economy.

In 2017, for example, Henkel formed a partnership with the Plastic Bank, a social enterprise which aims to reduce ocean plastic and provides opportunities for people in poverty at the same time.
